A U R I C U L A A U R I S
As part of the Karl Sczuka grant award 2022, which Ira Hadžić received for her audio piece "Heimatgefühle" (Deutschlandfunk Kultur 2021), this new work was realized in the sound dome of the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) Hertz-Lab in Karlsruhe.
The composition consists of four soundtracks that, in varying orbital movements through 47 speakers, gradually evolve and unfold around one central body: Auricula Auris - the ear conch.
"In the conch, shaped by the circulation of the sounds, the ear filters, selects, evaluates. Listening alone is required, like a double gaze directed at an implied external image, in whose reflection, however, the inner world is mirrored."
The piece was inspired by the legendary German radio soirée "The ear is the way. On listening to the world" by Joachim-Ernst Berendt from 1987. The raw material of the composition consists of gong sounds, played and recorded by Cedrik Fermont and Ira Hadžić.
